niger appeal - schools/classroom fundraising

Anti- Slavery International, with funding from Comic Relief, has built six schools in Northern Niger for children whose families have been subject to slavery. These schools aim to secure freedom through education for formerly enslaved children in Niger, by challenging ingrained discriminatory attitudes which are broken down by using a curriculum that emphasises equality and human rights.

Niger is one of the world’s poorest countries with over 60 percent of the population surviving on less than one US dollar a day. Those belonging to a slave class in Niger are marginalised and socially excluded. Despite the level of poverty which exists in Niger and the discrimination faced, the children attending the Anti-Slavery schools are excelling in their studies. However resources are limited and lack of food, water (caused by drought) and school equipment has put the continuation of the children’s education at risk.

Anti-Slavery International believes that in order to break the cycle of slavery, discrimination and poverty, it is crucial that the children continue to have access to quality education – and we need your help to achieve the goal of education and freedom in Niger. We have just launched our Niger Schools Christmas appeal and ask that school and students across and beyond the UK take action to help the children in Niger access their right to education.

Whilst contributing to tackling some of the root causes of slavery, which are discrimination, poverty and social exclusion, including lack of access to education, by making a financial contribution, it is important that students are aware of the wider occurences of slavery across the world. We have created a presentation that you can present at an assembly to give students an introduction to the issue of slavery before undertaking the fundraising drive. You can also invite a speaker or workshop facilitator to work with students.

Your school can fundraise in whatever way they wish, whether it be a mufti day, cake sale or a talent show! With the money you raise you can select from a range of gifts and every gift you buy will go straight to help the children in Niger. Every school that takes part will receive a personalised thank you from us, along with a schools participation certificate. Once you have raised your money, download the Anti-Slavery International Christmas Niger schools appeal complete and return the order form.

Thank you on behalf of the children in these schools in Niger.
